Somerset NHS Foundation Trust

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust implemented Eco Ninjas badge hats across their theatre departments in Spring 2024. The transformation was immediate and measurable, with staff and patients reporting overwhelmingly positive feedback within the first month.

FAQ

Common Questions

Are Theatre Badge Hats approved for infection control?

NHS Infection Prevention and Control governance is local rather than centralised, so there is no central national IPC approval body. Theatre Badge Hats have been cleared through IPC processes at NHS Trusts including Somerset NHS Foundation Trust (Trauma and Orthopaedics, Musgrove Park Hospital) and Great Western Hospital (maternity unit). They are processed through industrial laundering at four leading UK healthcare laundries (Elis, Johnsons Workwear, Rocliff, Synergy) operating to HTM 01-04 and BS EN 14065. Read our full IPC compliance page.

How are Theatre Badge Hats laundered?

Theatre Badge Hats are processed alongside scrubs at standard NHS thermal disinfection temperatures (approximately 70°C) through your existing hospital laundry contract. Four leading UK healthcare laundries have independently confirmed in writing that the hats are suitable for central laundering. The detachable badge is removed before laundering and cleaned separately with soap and water, or with Trust-approved clinical disinfectants where local IPC policy requires.

How much can an NHS Trust save by switching to reusable theatre caps?

Trust-specific. Typical outcomes are up to 48% cost saving over three years compared to disposable scrub caps, alongside approximately 90% reduction in single-use plastic waste in the theatre cap category. Run our Cost & Carbon Calculator for your Trust-specific figures.

How does the detachable badge attach to the theatre hat?

The badge attaches using stainless steel press studs, independently tested at TWI Cambridge in 2023 to 400+ peel separations with no wear and no dimensional change. The studs are simple, hygienic and have no intricate parts to trap bacteria. The badge can be transferred between laundered hats and remains with the staff member.

What hat styles are available?

Eco Ninjas offers 7 styles: Elastic Back, Bandana, Hammock (for long or thick hair), Braided, XL Braided, Hijab, and Surgical Hood. All available in 14 NHS-compliant colours. The product range is designed to fit the actual diversity of NHS theatre teams.

Can the badge be personalised with name and role?

Yes. Each badge can be printed with the staff member's name and role, or supplied with a writeable surface for rotating staff and students. Badges are detachable so they can be transferred between laundered hats and stay with the person across rotations.

Do you have a published Carbon Reduction Plan?

Yes. Our Carbon Reduction Plan is PPN 06/21-aligned, prepared by The Carbon Stamp, and published openly. Baseline emissions of 423.66 kg CO₂e for 2023/24, 50% reduction by 2035, Net Zero by 2045 in alignment with the NHS Net Zero Supplier Roadmap.
